About the speaker:

Amy R. Brooks-Kayal, MD, is professor and chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, where she leads major clinical, research and educational initiatives in neurological disorders. She is an internationally recognized physician-scientist and one of the foremost leaders in epilepsy research and clinical pediatric neurology. Dr. Brooks-Kayal received her Bachor of Science in biology and psychology from Cornell University (1980) and her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University (1984), followed by pediatric residency, child neurology residency and neuroscience fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Her research has focused on molecular and cellular mechanisms of epileptogenesis, particularly GABA-A receptor signaling and network remodeling following brain injury. Her pioneering discoveries established the critical roles of GABA receptor subunit plasticity and JAK/STAT signaling in the development of epilepsy and laid the foundation for novel strategies to prevent epilepsy and its comorbidities.

Over a distinguished 30-year career, she has authored hundreds of papers and maintained continuous NIH funding. She is a past president of the American Epilepsy Society (AES), served on the NINDS Advisory Council, and has held numerous leadership roles within the American Academy of Neurology, ILAE, Child Neurology Society and the Society for Neuroscience. She received many honors, including the ILAE Ambassador for Epilepsy Award, the AES Founders Award, the Bernard Sachs Award and the Women & Philanthropy Impact Award from UC Davis. In addition, she is widely recognized for her mentorship of trainees and leadership in shaping national epilepsy research priorities and improving the lives of individuals affected by epilepsy worldwide.
