Texas A&M research helped develop new medicine Ganaxolone (Ztalmy) for epilepsy
The Food and Drug Administration approved the neurosteroid ganaxolone for treatment of a certain type of genetic epilepsy. Research in the lab of Dr. Samba Reddy in the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics contributed to the development of this medicine, which is the only one approved by the FDA for this condition.

Texas A&M Today (April 3, 2019)
Texas A&M research leads to first drug for postpartum depression
Dr. Reddy’s research on neurosteroids has contributed to the development and FDA approval of allopregnanolone (also known as brexanolone, ZulressoÒ), the first medicine for treatment of post-partum depression in women worldwide. He has contributed to the basic therapeutic approach (NRT strategy) and extensively worked on this drug for 20 years, including identifying a unique mechanism and clinical use for perimenstrual and postpartum conditions. Brexanolone is a neurosteroid and positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors in the brain.  Reddy’s findings are published in over 50 papers, including his landmark neurosteroid replacement therapy (NRT) that he invented for treating neuroendocrine disorders and women’s health conditions. This neurosteroid is proven to be very effective and works rapidly within a few hours after administration. This medicine has opened new therapeutic doors for treating women with postpartum depression across the globe.
